推荐制的原则为学生整体的综合素质。只有整体素质优秀的学生才能被提名参加北京大学的自主招生考试。
文中的independent recruitment就是指“自主招生”，这种招考形式给予高校一定比例的自主权，可以绕过分数真正地选择“个性”学生。例如有些学校在招生中试行的nominations from their headmasters(校长推荐制)。但由于家长和考生担心招考透明度，也引发了人们的担忧。
Recruitment常用来表示“吸收新成员”，企业招聘就可以用它来表示，例如recruitment coordinator(招聘协调人)。在征兵工作中它也可以表示“招募新兵”，例如recruiter 就是指“征兵人员”。
除了independent外，autonomous也可以用来指“自主权”，比如年轻人享有marital autonomy(婚姻自主权)，企业享有right of autonomy for enterprises(企业自主权)等等。 （实习编辑：顾萍）
