Who’s who
It has never been explained why university students seem to enjoy practical jokes more than anyone else. Students specialize in a particular type of practical joke: the hoax. Inviting the fire-brigade to put out a non-existent fire is a crude form of deception which no self-respecting student would ever indulge in, Students often create amusing situations which are funny to everyone except the victims. When a student recently saw two workmen using a pneumatic drill outside his university, he immediately telephoned the police and informed them that two students dressed up as workmen were tearing up the road with a pneumatic drill. As soon as he had hung up, he went over to the workmen and told them that if a policeman ordered them to go away, they were not to take him seriously. He added that a student had dressed up as a policeman and was playing all sorts of silly jokes on people. Both the police and the workmen were grateful to the student for this piece of advance information.
The student hid in an archway nearby where he could watch and hear everything that went on. Sure enough, a policeman arrived on the scene and politely asked the workmen to go away. When he received a very rude reply from one of the workmen, he threatened to remove them by force. The workmen told him to do as he pleased and the policeman telephoned for help. Shortly afterwards, four more policemen arrived and remonstrated with the workmen. As the men refused to stop working, the police attempted to seize the pneumatic drill. The workmen struggled fiercely and one of them lost his temper. He threatened to call the police. At this, the police pointed out ironically that this would hardly be necessary as the men were already under arrest. Pretending to speak seriously, one of the workmen asked if he might make a telephone call before being taken
to the station. Permission was granted and a policeman accompanied him to a call-box. Only when he saw that the man was actually telephoning the police did he realize that they had all been the victims of a hoax.

Be an Optimist(做一个乐观的人)
Do you see the glass as half-full rather than half empty?Do you keep your eye upon the doughnut，not upon the hole?Suddenly these clichés are scientific questions，as researchers scrutinize the power of positive thinking. Research is proving that optimism can help you to be happier，healthier and more successful. Pessimism leads，数坦by contrast，to hopelessness，sickness and failure，and is linked to depression，loneliness and painful shyness. If we could teach people to think more positively，it would be like inoculating them against these mental ills.
Your habits count but the belief that you can succeed affects whether or not you will. In part，that‘s because optimists and pessimists deal with the same challenges and disappointments in very different ways. When things go wrong the pessimist tends to blame himself.“I’m not good at this.”“I always fail.”He would say. But the optimist looks for loopholes. Negative or positive，it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. If people feel hopeless they don‘t bother to acquire the skills they need to succeed.
A sense of control is the litmus test for success. The optimist feels in control of his own life. If things are going badly，he acts quickly，looking for solutions，forming a new plan of action，and reaching out for advice. The pessimist feels like fate‘s plaything and moves slowly. He doesn’t seek advice，since he assumes nothing can be done. Many studies suggest that the pessimist‘s feeling f helplessness undermines the body’s natural defenses，the immune system. Research has found that the pessimist doesn‘t take good care of himself. Feeling passive and unable to dodge life’s blows，he expects ill health and other misfortunes，no matter what he does. He munches on junk food，avoids exercise，ignores the doctor，had another drink.
Most people are a mix of optimism and pessimism，but are inclined in one direction or the other. It is a pattern of thinking learned at our mothers‘knees. It grown out of thousands of cautions or encouragements，negative statements or positives ones. Too many“don’t”and warnings of danger can make a child feel incompetent，fearful—and pessimistic. Pessimism is hard habit to break—but it can be done.

caring for her and loving her until the day she died.
Twenty days later his own time was at an end.
I lost my hero, my father, a man who was my friend.
A few years have passed, and life just isn'轿庆t the same.
But as Father's Day approaches, I will celebrate8 his name.
With prayers to him and God above to stay by my side,
to watch over me and guide me, to look down on me with pride.
For I am my father's daughter, one day we will meet again.
But until then I will remember, and the love will never end.
