Net income at Alibaba, the fast-growing Chinese ecommerce website quarter-owned by Yahoo, more than doubled as China’s online economy continues to boom despite economic slowdown elsewhere in the country.

The results mean that Alibaba is now China’s second-largest online company by revenue, behind Tencent Holdings, which had revenues of almost $1.7bn in its latest quarterly results. Alibaba declined to comment.
