A Chinese car parts maker has won an auction for bankrupt battery maker A123 Systems in yet a further example of success in international dealmaking by Chinese groups.
Tim Pohl of Lazard, the lead banker advising A123 on its sale, said Wanxiang Group bid about $260m to win the auction for the battery maker, which supplies electric cars, but that the sale still required the approval of the Delaware court where the company filed for bankruptcy.
A123 would formally submit the result to the court for approval tomorrow, he added. The sale will also require the approval of Committee on Foreign Investment in the US.
The parties involved were optimistic about getting these approvals, a person close to the situation said.
The move comes after Cnooc, the Beijing-backed oil group, on Friday secured Canadian approval for its bid for Nexen, the biggest Chinese M and A deal on record.
China M and A in the year to December 7 reached $145bn, a record in any year by this point, according to Thomson Reuters.
In October, A123, which was awarded a $249m grant from the US government, became the latest stimulus-backed company to file for bankruptcy, prompting attacks on President Barack Obama’s support for emerging energy technologies.
In October, A123 said it was seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection “to provide for an orderly sale of its operations.
The company had before the bankruptcy attempted to secure a rescue deal with Wanxiang.
